Artist's Description
First flown in 1958, the Douglas DC-8 was among the early jet power airplanes available for commercial service. The DC-8 was manufactured in many versions including the stretched Super 60 and 70 series. Many airplanes were fitted with new CFM56 engines in the late 70s and early 80s making the DC-8 quieter and more efficient to operate. On August 21, 1961, a DC-8 became the first civilian jet to exceed the sound barrier doing so in a shallow dive through 41,000 feet altitude. The DC-8 had a larger freight capacity than it's chief competition, the Boeing 707. Many freighter versions of the DC-8 are still in operation today. This print depicts a DC-8-21 taking off in 1972 its Pratt & Whitney JT4A-3 engines at full throttle and heavy exhaust so common of the early generation of jet engines.

And the stories of the incredible experiences of the men who operated those machines are the stuff of legends and sometimes nightmares. From an early age I tried to express my fascination through drawing. I suppose my first...
