The Porsche 908 was first raced in 1968. The open spyder 980/3 was a 1970 evolution of that original closed coupe car. Featuring a 360HO, 2,997 cc, flat-8 engine, the 908/3 was a light weight design intended for the more twisty tracks such as the Targa Florio and Nürburgring which favored more nimble cars. It was the perfect compliment to the Porsche 917 which dominated the road racing circuit during this time but was not as well suited for the twisty courses.
Utilizing a tubular frame and titanium as well as a foam and plastic body, the 908/3 was incredibly light weighing only 1,200 lbs. Because of this weight the Italians dubbed it "The Miracle Porsche". Critics of the day predicted the car would not stand up to the rigors of an endurance race. They were wrong and the 908/3 racked up an incredible 75% win rate.
The car shown here is the one driven to a win in the 54th Targa Florio in 1970. It was piloted by drivers Jo Siffert and Brian Redman.

And the stories of the incredible experiences of the men who operated those machines are the stuff of legends and sometimes nightmares. From an early age I tried to express my fascination through drawing. I suppose my first...
