Description
Developed under controversy, the General Dynamics F-111 first entered service in 1967. Known as the Aardvark in US service the airplane was also purchased by the Royal Australian Air Force where it was christened the Pig. The F-111 features variable geometry wings which enable effective operation through a wide flight envelope. Capable of speeds of Mach 2.5, the F-111 was designed as an all-weather attack aircraft with a terrain avoidance radar system providing low-level penetration of enemy defenses. The F-111 became known for its rock solid ride, incredible speed and unequaled low level attack capabilities. In United States and Australian service the F-111 was beloved by all who knew it. The last F-111 was retired from RAAF service in 2010.
